Dental Imaging and Diagnostics at SwissMed Clinic
Accurate diagnosis leads to confident treatment decisions. SwissMed Clinic operates an on-site dental imaging suite that supports your dentist with panoramic OPG radiography, three-dimensional CBCT scans, and high-definition intraoral photography and digital scans. These tools provide clear views of teeth, bone, joints, nerves, and soft tissues so treatment can be planned precisely and completed efficiently.
OPG Panoramic X-ray
An OPG captures both jaws, the teeth, and surrounding structures in a single image. It is ideal for routine screening, wisdom tooth assessment, initial evaluation of the temporomandibular joints, and orthodontic planning. Your clinician uses the panoramic view to identify impacted teeth, cysts, fractures, missing or extra teeth, and general bone health. The examination is quick and comfortable. You simply stand still while the machine rotates gently around your head and the image appears on screen within seconds.
CBCT Three-Dimensional Imaging
CBCT provides a detailed three-dimensional map of the jaws and facial structures. It is especially valuable for implant planning, complex root canal cases, oral surgery mapping, impacted canines, airway and sinus assessment, and orthognathic evaluation. The scan shows bone height and width and the exact position of nearby nerves and sinus cavities. Your dentist can then plan implant size and angulation with millimetre accuracy, locate extra or curved canals before endodontic treatment, and choose the safest surgical approach. Scans are taken with low-dose protocols and are recommended only when the added information will change your care.
Intraoral Photography and Digital Scans
High-resolution photographs document the condition of your teeth and gums and make it easier to explain findings clearly. Digital impressions captured with an intraoral scanner replace many traditional moulds. The scanner creates a precise three-dimensional model of your teeth and bite that can be used to design crowns, bridges, veneers, night guards, orthodontic aligners, and retainers. Digital records improve accuracy, reduce visits, and help the laboratory achieve a natural fit and appearance.
Your Imaging Experience
Before any image is taken, your clinician reviews your history and explains why a particular view is indicated. Lead aprons and thyroid protection are used where appropriate. Appointments are short and carefully scheduled, and most scans take only a few minutes. Images and reports are shared securely with your treating dentist or specialist. If you have been referred from another clinic, we accept referrals and return results promptly so your treatment can proceed without delay.
Safety and Radiation
SwissMed Clinic follows the principle of keeping radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable. Digital systems allow high-quality images at lower doses and reduce the need for repeat films. Imaging is prescribed only when it will add meaningful diagnostic value or influence your treatment plan. If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, tell your clinician so that timing, shielding, and alternatives can be considered carefully.
Frequently asked questions Dental Imaging
What is the difference between an OPG and a CBCT
An OPG is a two-dimensional panoramic image that provides an overview of the jaws and teeth, which is useful for screening and orthodontic planning. A CBCT is a three-dimensional scan that shows exact bone dimensions and the location of nerves and sinuses, which is essential for implants, complex root canals, and surgical planning.
Are dental X-rays and CBCT scans safe
Digital equipment uses low radiation doses and scans are prescribed only when necessary. Protective measures are used during every exposure. Your dentist will explain why a particular image is recommended for your case.
How long does a scan take
Most OPGs take less than a minute of exposure time and a few minutes in the room. CBCT scans are similarly quick, with image acquisition in seconds and total appointment time typically under ten minutes.
Can I have an OPG or CBCT during pregnancy
Imaging is avoided during pregnancy unless the benefits clearly outweigh the risks. If a scan is essential, additional precautions are taken. Always inform your clinician if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.
Will I receive a copy of my images
Yes. Digital copies can be provided to you and sent securely to your referring dentist or specialist along with a report when requested.
Do I need a referral for imaging
We welcome referrals from dentists and specialists. If you are a SwissMed patient, your clinician will request the appropriate images as part of your plan. If you attend from another clinic, bring your referral and any previous records so we can coordinate promptly.
